There are two kinds of professional programmers: those who have learned of Steve Yegge ’s rants and those who should. If you really don’t know who he is, let me put it short:

Steve Yegge is a Googlean programmer and an überprolific blogger producing pageloads of long articles containing lots of crucial observations related to computer software, coated with witty enough sidemarks so that you survive through his long ramblings.

Now go read his posts. You should probably start with this.

(I’ve read his posts before, but now that I have a new phone with an excellent RSS reader, I finally added his site to my feeds I follow daily. Before the new phone, Yegge’s posts were just plain too long to follow them on daily basis)
