Modeling is fun
March 30th, 2007
At last I went to cellar, swept the dust layer off the F16 B-50 fighter I once almost started to work on.
I never realized how enjoyable constructing plastic models is. You have to be very careful in detaching the parts from the sprue, sand away traces of resin, and painting is very difficult to do it so that outcome won’t look plastic, but it is possible – not with my first model, though :-P – and the end result can be a very accurate representation of the original, yielding satisfaction of accomplishment.
I guess the fun factor is partly due to difference compared with my work, which has nothing to do with steady hand, excruciating precision and stuff. Not that modeling is the opposite of computer programming; both require attention to detail as well as good overall view of the thing you are trying to accomplish.
The only downside is that you need quality tools to get decent results. Fine paint brushes as well as some other tools are rather expensive, but without a good airbrush and compressor (and appropriate working area to use them!) you are doomed to fail, or at least quite limited in your finishing options.
No, I won’t publish pictures of the model, because at the moment it reminds me of particular Calvin & Hobbes strip, where Calvin tried to assemble a certain fighter model kit..
